Facebook Etiquette: Iz Propa Spelling Relli Necessary?

As far as pet peeves go, bad spelling and grammar is up there on my list of punishable offences, especially on social network sites. Almost every day Facebook is subjected to a barrage of statuses that often need at least three attempts before you actually decipher what is being said. Obviously the use of text language is expected when using social network sites as many users update their statuses whilst on the move. However, those that go out of their way to misspell and modify words are what really grind this web developers gears.

One of the most common examples of bad Facebook grammar is the overuse of the letter ‘z’. It is guaranteed that at least once a day a status will pop up stating that someone ‘Iz off to the shop’ or ‘Iz off to pick up the kidz’. Not only do these statuses look and sound ridiculous, on a practical level the ‘z’ key is actually further away from the ‘s’ on a standard keyboard, meaning that these serial offenders are actually going out of their way to destroy the English language.

Another popular status choice is using the caps lock key to create what could be the ultimate Facebook annoyance. By changing just a few letters a status can go from being as simple as;

Stuart is at work and looking forward to getting home
To
Stuart iZ aT wOrK aNd LoOkInG fOrWaRd To GeTtInG hOme

It is crazy to think that some Facebook users will go out of their way to ensure that their status is as difficult to read as possible. At least the use of the ‘z’ key is limited to the few times that it is used in the sentence, the uppercase/lowercase technique is a full on onslaught that will no doubt be repeated until the user finally realises that it does not offer anything extra to their updates.

The ‘hide’ button is an option when it comes to hiding the offending statuses; however when you are faced with pages full of badly written updates it can get annoying. Of course the occasional spelling or grammar mistake can be forgiven, especially when you are in a rush to type a status or your mind is elsewhere.

The only saving grace with repeat Facebook status offenders is that eventually their disregard for the English language will come to haunt them.
