Fantasy Football: We've Seen it all Before

Fantasy Football: We

For those new to the game, the Wikipedia definition of fantasy football is;

...a game in which participants assemble an imaginary team of real life players and score points based on those players' actual statistical performance or their perceived contribution on the field of play. Usually players are selected from one specific division in a particular country, although there are many variations.

There are thousands of internet fantasy football leagues set up each year at the start of the football season, all with witty team names and full of competitive football fans. Although the players may be different there are always certain aspects of these fantasy games that remain the same.

The 'oh so hilarious' Team name

Choosing a name for your fantasy football team is similar to naming a pet or a child, if you get it wrong you immediately look like an idiot and will be seen as an idiot till the season is over. There is no equation to determine just how good a team name is, however there are several helpful hints to ensure that you avoid the ‘idiot-trap’. First of all, you are probably not the first person to discover that putting 'K' in front of 'FC' will create the name of a popular fast food chain, just as you are not the only one to find the humour in 'Inter Your Mum' or 'Norfolk Enchance'. Unless you are blessed with a gift for finding obscure football references and puns that everyone will get, using your surname (Smith FC, Bunn Rangers etc) or a well placed swear word always seems to go down well.

The Pre Season Smack Talk

It is easy to get carried away when joining a fantasy league, especially before the season has even started. In almost every fantasy league there are players who decide to start boasting about their teams and what they will be spending their winnings on, before the first whistle has even been blown. One of the joys of football is the unpredictability therefore the 'unbeatable' team created weeks before the first match may be looking like your local Sunday league by mid season. Try and resist the urge to rise to the banter of a premature boaster and focus on perfecting your smug yet surprised face for when you collect your winnings.
