Hunting for a job is hard enough until you had to consider the dreaded Facebook factor. With more and more employers admitting to searching for their potential employees profile on the social network site, it is fast becoming a race to delete anything incriminating before they see it. A recent study has found that more than half of British adults are concerned about their online profiles, to the point where if they were handed a button to erase everything, it would be pressed in a heartbeat. With more and more information becoming public knowledge, it is sometimes hard to keep track of just what you have been tagged in. From photos to your own teenage blog posts, if you are not careful about what goes into cyberspace there is no telling where it might end up. Each of the participants in the study was questioned about the amount of personal information they have online and how it could potentially affect them. Although many were not fazed by the potentially damaging material on sites such as Facebook, others had admitted to going on a deleting frenzy after they had started applying for jobs.
Although the digital age is supposed to be bringing everyone closer together, there are still certain things which many would prefer to be left well away from the public eye. If you are reading this and thinking how lucky you are that it does not apply to you then first of all, congratulations. Secondly, cast your mind back to your last night out, if it seems hazy to you then how do you know if one of your friends is just waiting to upload those pictures of you dancing on top of tables with your shirt in your hand?
Although it is great to share the lighter side of life with friends and family, it is worth checking to make sure that there is nothing too incriminating on the sites. If you are currently job hunting, take the time to do a Google search along with the usual tidying up of Twitter and Facebook to see what comes up.
