Its Friday, Friday! The Rise of Rebecca Black

Unless you have buried your head in the sand for the last few months it is unlikely that your ears had escaped the ‘delightful’ sound of Rebecca Black. The American teenager’s song ‘Friday’ has become one of the fastest growing trends on the internet, being passed from social network to network quicker than a cute kitten viral. Last week the video surpassed the 100 million view mark on YouTube after just one month, staggering when you consider the fact that just two months ago no one had heard of Rebecca Black. The song is now infamous for its questionable lyrics and overuse of auto tune, some choice snippets include the eternal dilemma:

“Kickin’ in the front seat
Sittin’ in the back seat
Gotta make my mind up
Which seat can I take?”
And philosophical musing such as,
“Yesterday was Thursday, Thursday
Today it is Friday, Friday
Tomorrow is Saturday
And Sunday comes afterwards”

Twitter users will have noticed the top worldwide trend #rebeccablack which does rear its head on a certain day of the week. Along with social network dominance the song also found its way to many of the top TV shows including the Jay Leno show and Good Morning America. The American teen also managed to cross the pond, with the video being uniquely analysed by Twitter’s favourite show ‘Celebrity Juice’. So far the song has spawned several remixes and interpretations including a Deadmau5 remix and a scarily convincing Bob Dylan-esque cover. If you have not yet had the joy of waking up on the last working day of the week and immediately finding Rebecca Black’s voice in your head, you obviously need to head off to YouTube and start acquainting yourself with the ‘Friday’ collection. To kick start your introduction to this year’s Twitter phenomenon why not start with the original?
