If like Web Guy you are lucky enough to be able to stroll through Stockton High Street during the day then you might have noticed an exciting development which will hopefully change the face of the town. Until now the most popular form of artwork was poorly spelt graffiti sprayed against shops and council buildings; however the high street now boasts a black and white photograph of The Beatles placed over large double doors. Almost every resident in the town knows someone who went to see the Fab Four at the Globe Theatre during the 60’s, it is a story passed around pubs and used as fodder for the new strain of ‘indie kids’ trying to impress their mates. The emergence of the new picture is not just there to serve as a delightful nostalgia trip; instead it is a symbol of the multi million pound restoration project that will bring the once defunct theatre back to life.
As a Stockton resident Web Guy is more than pleased to hear that life will be blasted into the high street in the form of a live entertainment venue (lets be fair, it makes a change from the unveiling of a new Pound Shop). With the capacity to hold around 2,500 people, the venue is set to become one of the largest live performance areas in the North East. In its heyday the theatre attracted people from all across the country with big name acts such as Buddy Holly, The Rolling Stones and of course The Beatles.
The company behind the restoration are Teesside developers, Jomast who are planning to transform the space whilst also keeping its existing art deco features. Plans have been drawn up to extend the current seating area and upgrade the current bars and washrooms along with transforming an adjacent property into a bar and bistro.
Although the restoration may take some time, speculation as to just which acts could perform is already rife. Due to the size of the venue it is possible that the Globe could attract big name artists such as those that regularly perform at the nearby Newcastle 02 Academy. Whoever does end up gracing the stage there is no denying that this is a fantastic addition to Stockton High Street and one that Web Guy is very excited about!
