One of my pet hates is the competitiveness that erupts when a new phone is released. Long gone are the days when people simply picked a phone because it was practical or ‘pretty’, instead there are constant displays of smugness by those that have managed to pick up the latest iPhone. So far I have managed to avoid joining the mobile phone rat race, choosing to stick with the same phone for a whole two years due to the fact that it is easy to use. However when it comes to picking a new phone is it now impossible to avoid getting sucked into the world of apps, internet browsing speeds and high tech cameras? A Dutch phone company has recognised the plight of those lost in a world of mobile phone lingo and created what many are calling ‘the anti-iPhone’.
The ridiculously simple device is known as ‘John’s Phone’ and only allows users to make or receive calls. Gone are the flashy lights and touch screens, instead users have a plain phone with coloured icons to pick up and put down a call. The phone is set to become a hit with parents purchasing a mobile for their kids and for those that are put off by the flashy features of the latest array of popular mobiles.
The manual for the phone takes up just one page, a welcome relief for those who have struggled to work out how to even switch on a new model. Even the address book has taken things back to basics with an actual pen and paper notepad stored in the rear of the phone. One of the biggest plus points of ‘John’s Phone’ is that one charge will last you for around three weeks, staggering when you consider that many of the new models need charging at least once a week.
The simplicity of the phone will definitely not be to everyone’s tastes, however those of us that have stared blankly whilst a phone salesman lists your ‘must have’ features will definitely see the attraction!
