The Evolution of Twitter
On the surface Twitter seems to be the plainer cousin of sites such as Facebook; however this simple concept has taken the world by storm with millions of people already Tweeting on a daily basis. Twitter combines normal everyday communication with friends, with insights into the normal everyday life of celebrities. With everyone from President Obama to Paris Hilton sending regular updates to the site, it is now possible to find out everything you need and more about even the most mundane aspects of the fame lifestyle.
Twitter gives its users a mere 140 characters to express a thought, question or a simple update on their lives. Not as in depth as a Facebook status however perhaps the attraction of the site is the lack of irrelevance, with so few characters there is simply no time to state the obvious. A Twitter update or ‘Tweet’ can be accompanied by links to pictures, other sites or even the user’s blog, again providing a quick way to say ‘hey look at this’.
Already Twitter has gained a reputation for provoking controversy between celebrity users with many public feuds being played out within the 140 character limit. However along with the negative aspects many celebrities also use it as a platform for good by promoting their chosen charities, offering free downloads of songs or even taking the time to communicate individually with fans. The ever-changing list of Top Ten Most Influential Tweeters is published each year with famous faces such as Britney Spears and Ashton Kutcher fighting it out for the top spot.
Apart from the odd annoying advert, Twitter has so far avoided overloading users with added extras and features which many find to be a relief from the masses of spam found on Facebook or other social networking sites. With simple updates and access to the lives of your favourite celebrities, Twitter has fast become part of the daily routine with many users choosing to Tweet from the bus, the workplace or the sofa. It may seem to be a boring concept; however with millions of Tweeters from all over the world already hooked it may not be long before everyone’s tweeting.
