The Social Network: Facebook Hits the Big Screen

The Social Network: Facebook Hits the Big Screen

If someone had told me last year that one of the most highly anticipated movies of 2010 would be about Facebook I probably would have laughed. Even when the news broke about the release of ‘The Social Network’ I could not imagine how a director could create a dramatic release out of a website (unless it was a live action Mafia Wars vs. Farmville). When the trailer was released the intrigue surrounding the film started to set in as the story has all of the components of a box office success. With best friends at war, billion dollar law suits and even an appearance by Justin Timberlake the two hour film definitely has enough to entice even Facebook haters to the cinema.

The film offers the chance to see the staggering growth of one of the world’s most popular websites that has a massive 500 million members worldwide. By charting the growth of the social networking phenomenon, audiences can see how it developed from a simple idea to a project that created one of the youngest billionaires in the world. Although the story of how Mark Zuckerberg created (or stole) the idea of the site is readily available on the internet, ‘Zombieland’ star Jesse Eisenberg manages to bring the qualities of the billionaire to life in a performance that critics have hailed as ‘superb’. Those planning on seeing the film should not expect a tale of one man beating the odds; Eisenberg brings to life a character full of arrogance and self promotion that enters into a bitter battle with his two best friends over the creation of the site.

‘The Social Network’ may not have the drama and action of a high octane Hollywood blockbuster, however it does offer a valuable insight into the history of a site that has infiltrated almost all of our lives. The film is described as being an ‘unofficial biopic’ and although some scenes may be exaggerated for added effect, there is no escaping the basic truths that form the building blocks of the film. Although there have been rumours that mark Zuckerberg attended a pre-screening of the movie there is no confirmation that he will be logging on to ‘like’ it.
